The Electric Scooter Market Declines in 2023
The year 2023 has been marked by a significant decrease in electric scooter sales, with a tally of 678,000 new scooters sold, a decline of 10.7% compared to the previous year.
This regression caught professionals by surprise, especially after the ban of self-service scooters in Paris, an event that did not stimulate the market as anticipated.
Market Analysis
According to indicators highlighted by the FPMM Federation / Smart Mobility Lab barometer, the trend is towards a “market consolidation,” but the significant decline observed cannot be overlooked.
Indeed, this drop marks a significant divergence from the 2021 figures when the sector peaked with more than 900,000 scooters sold in the midst of the post-Covid context.
A Clientele Turning to High-End Products
The sector is experiencing a shift in consumption habits with 80% of buyers opting for a more expensive model when renewing their equipment.
This is reflected in the reduced sales for scooters priced under €500, which have seen their market share plummet by 26 points in two years, going from 92% in 2021 to 66% in 2023. Concomitantly, the more expensive models are increasingly attractive, with a notable increase for those priced above €800, now representing 11% of the market.
A Decrease in the Average Selling Price
Despite this move towards high-end purchases, the average price of an electric scooter decreased by nearly 10% in 2023, establishing itself at €408 compared to €455 the previous year.
This price nevertheless remains higher than those recorded in 2020 and 2021, which were €322 and €341 respectively.
A repercussion on turnover
This market adjustment is also reflected in the turnover with a production of 277 million euros in 2023, marking a decrease of 20% compared to the year 2022.
