New Patent for a Sporty Electric Motorcycle at Yamaha
Towards Imminent Electric Evolution
Since the launch of the Yamaha PES2 in 2015, which failed to come to fruition, the brand now seems to be seriously considering integrating electric motorcycles into its range. Although Yamaha already offers the NEO’S and Booster electric mopeds, as well as a range of electric bicycles, the electric motorcycle has not yet materialized. However, a recent patent brings a glimmer of hope for this segment.
The patent, based on a traditional motorcycle structure, reveals a model with a decidedly sporty look. The motorcycle features a large box for batteries, thus maximizing space. The motor is mounted at the rear, freeing up space for the battery pack.
Air Cooling System
To reduce complexity and weight, Yamaha has opted for an air cooling system for its battery. Although less efficient than a liquid cooling system, this choice is likely to be more economical. Ribbed plates are installed around the box to improve cooling by optimizing airflow.
The battery consists of four vertically stacked modules, surrounded by visible electronic components. The battery management system (BMS) is placed above the pack, while the inverter is located at the bottom. The charger is integrated under the motorcycle seat.
Technical Unknowns
For now, Yamaha has not revealed the technical specifications of this model, including the motor power or battery capacity. The completion of this project remains in the research and development stage with no guarantee of imminent commercialization.
