Summary
The management of the Babboe bike recall progresses
The recall of Babboe cargo bikes is progressing: more than 80% of the affected models have already been dealt with. The manufacturer is implementing new initiatives to speed up inspections and close the incident by early 2025.
The genesis of the problem
In February 2024, structural problems were discovered on various models of Babboe electric cargo bikes, which resulted in a massive recall of 22,000 bikes across Europe. The Dutch manufacturer was criticized for its late responsiveness and the lack of clarity regarding compensation for affected owners.
Progress of the procedure
According to Babboe, the majority of the affected bikes have been replaced, and about 70% have been inspected to ensure their safety. Babboe aims to close the procedure by early 2025, taking additional measures to resolve the remaining cases.
Enhanced measures for clients
In order to speed up resolution and satisfy owners, Babboe offers:
- Replacement or refund: Owners can choose a replacement bike via an online store or opt for a refund calculated based on the age and purchase price of the bike, in accordance with ACM guidelines.
- Expanded inspections: Since July 2024, 70% of the bikes have been inspected. The inspection now relies on specialist retailers in Europe to speed up the process.
- Free service and improvements: All owners can benefit from a free service, with sometimes technical improvements to ensure the durability and safety of active models.
With these initiatives, Babboe hopes to regain the trust of its customers and put a definitive end to this crisis, which has profoundly impacted the cargo bike sector. The company is committed to finalizing all deliveries and inspections by the end of January 2025.
