Green light for the future of the ecological bonus in France
The sustainability of the ecological bonus for electric vehicles in France can reassure future buyers faced with often high costs.
This governmental support for the purchase of emission-free vehicles is not expected to disappear immediately.
Adopted in 2008, the ecological bonus has undergone various adjustments to meet budgetary and environmental requirements. The scheme now excludes plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles priced over 47,000 euros, and those weighing more than 2.4 tons.
Amounts adapted to income
The maximum ceiling of the aid has been lowered and now ranges up to 4,000 euros, being able to rise to 7,000 euros for households whose reference tax income per share is less than 15,400 euros.
This decision was taken alongside the restriction on the eligibility of imported electric models, particularly those from China.
A promising contract between the state and the automotive industry
Beyond concerns about a possible elimination of the bonus, a glimmer of hope shines on the horizon.
The signing of a strategic contract between the French State and the automotive industry provides for the conservation of the ecological bonus until at least 2027.
The government’s commitments are accompanied by specific conditions designed to encourage manufacturers to accelerate the transition to vehicle electrification.
Ambitious goals for electrification
Under this agreement, the industry commits to significantly increase the registrations of electric vehicles, with a factor of four for passenger cars and a factor of six for commercial vehicles by 2027.
However, not everything has been approved in favor of manufacturers, such as the reduction of production taxes that is not included in the contract.
The conversion bonus maintained
In addition to the ecological bonus, the conversion bonus also benefits from an extension until 2027. This scheme allows for up to 5,000 euros in return for scrapping a thermal vehicle for the purchase of a new electric model, with amounts adjusted according to income. Moreover, there is the scheduled return of social leasing the following year, suggesting a continuity of measures to encourage the acquisition of electric cars.
