In partnership with the Ministry of Defense, the British police are working on a device emitting electromagnetic waves. The latter could disable an overheating engine by targeting an electric bike. The goal is to strengthen the fight against criminal activities.
A device inspired by movies
The project, reported by The Guardian, might remind of scenes from Ghostbusters. The British police are developing an uncommon device capable of generating electromagnetic waves specifically designed for electric bikes and scooters. This device is worn on the back, hence the comparison with the iconic figures from the movie.
This device interferes with the electric motor, making it believe it is overheating, and thus causes it to stop. According to Gavin Stephens, president of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), the motor shuts down immediately. Visual contact with the vehicle is necessary for the device’s operation.
Use of the device
The practical use of this device includes hit-and-run offenses and thefts of bikes or scooters caught red-handed. Urban and trekking electric bikes are often heavy, and without motor assistance, they become difficult to move. This gives the police a decisive advantage in apprehending criminals.
Developed in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Lab, this innovation by the Ministry of Defense is still in the development phase. According to Gavin Stephens, its availability will not be for several months.
