Royal Enfield prepares the launch of its first electric motorcycle
Development of a dedicated team
Royal Enfield recently revealed during a press conference that they are actively working on their first electric motorcycle. One of the main announcements was the creation of a separate commercial team to manage the brand’s electric vehicle department.
Several renowned professionals have joined this team, like Umesh Krishnappa, former CTO at Ola Electric, and Mario Alvisi, former manager at Ducati.
Investments and strategic collaborations
For some time now, Royal Enfield has been strengthening its capabilities in the field of electric vehicles. In 2022, the parent company Eicher Motors invested 50 million euros in Stark Future, a Spanish manufacturer of off-road electric motorcycles. Then, in November 2023, Royal Enfield unveiled its first electric prototype, the Himalayan Electric, at EICMA 2023.
Launch plans and forecasts
The Himalayan Electric is mainly a test bed for the brand’s future electric projects. It is unlikely that this model will be the first commercialized electric vehicle, as motorcycles dedicated to touring and off-road adventures require a range that current battery technology cannot yet offer.
We believe that Royal Enfield’s first electric model could be a retro roadster designed for urban use and occasional highway travel. A prototype of this final model could be presented at EICMA 2024. The commercial launch is not expected before the end of 2025 or early 2026.
