Ridley launches its first urban electric bike
The Belgian bicycle brand Ridley has unveiled its first urban electric bike, named Urbx. The name Urbx stands for urban exploration, and this model is presented as the “ideal bike for the modern city dweller”. The prices of the Urbx start at 2399€, and several frame styles are available. This launch comes a year after the ‘Belgian Cycling Factory’, the parent company of Ridley and Eddy Merckx, announced a 15 million euro investment in the production of electric bicycles.
A “lifestyle on wheels”
The Urbx marks Ridley’s first foray into the world of urban electric bikes. The brand, usually known for its high-end bikes, is targeting an interesting price segment here. Two frame styles are available: the Mixte with a lower frame, and the Gent with a traditional diamond shape. You don’t necessarily have to be a “gent” to choose this frame!
Ridley has opted for Ergon finishing equipment for the grips and saddle, ensuring maximum comfort based on feedback from various users.
The propulsion system
The Urbx is equipped with the Bafang G310 hub motor, offering up to 30 Nm of torque. This may seem low, but Ridley guarantees that these bikes “do not need the most powerful motor”, favoring a more “natural” riding experience. The 360 Wh battery offers a claimed range of up to 80 km, finding a balance between weight, power, and capacity. For greater urban convenience, mudguards, a rear rack, and integrated lights in the seatpost and handlebars are present.
You can also choose between a belt drive or derailleur transmission.
Specifications
Three sizes are available: S, M, and L for the high-frame version, and S and M for the open-frame design. Both offer the choice between a simple belt drive or a 10-speed Shimano Deore group. The Urbx uses a combination of an aluminum frame and a carbon fork. Prices start at 2399€, placing it in the entry to mid-range urban electric bike category. The Urbx is already available at Ridley dealers.
