Hongqi reveals an electric convertible
The Chinese car brand Hongqi, present on the European market, has unveiled a new electric convertible EH7 at the prestigious Beijing Auto Show.
This revelation marks a rarity in the world of electric convertibles available on the market.
Historically, the convertible market has not been a major sector for car manufacturers with the exception of a few notable successes like the Mazda MX-5.
Convertibles, perceived above all as prestigious and pleasure vehicles, are distinguished by their high cost, partly derived from the complex technical modifications necessary to integrate a retractable roof and to reinforce their structure.
Behind the scenes in the industry, the trend was towards a gradual abandonment of these models for cost reasons.
However, the advent of electric propulsion could change the situation. As an example, MG plans to launch the Cyberster, a high-powered sports convertible.
Thus, a possible renaissance in this vehicle category with the rise of electric powertrains is anticipated.
The eH7 convertible from Hongqi, presented to the public in Beijing, does not exhibit the typical attributes of a sports car. With a length of 4.98 meters, a width of 1.92 meters and height of 1.49 meters, not to mention a generous wheelbase of three meters, this model invites relaxation and peaceful excursions.
A sleek interior, remarkable performance
The convertible’s interior is as refined as the eponymous sedan, offering a dashboard equipped with two curved screens of 6 and 15.5 inches and a minimalist design with almost no visible buttons. The steering wheel, for its part, adopts a futuristic design reminiscent of a large-sized game controller.
The electric powertrain extends its performance with a base model of 253 kW, equivalent to 343 horsepower, which can go up to 455 kW for 618 horsepower.
The proposed autonomy is just as remarkable: 600 kilometers according to the CLTC cycle, which is almost 510 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle thanks to a 75 kWh battery.
The higher version can promise up to 800 km CLTC with a 111 kWh battery.
This convertible also benefits from a front motor and another at the rear, allowing for a 0 to 100 km/h in about 4 seconds and a compatibility announced with a rapid battery exchange system.
An attractive price for a notable entry
The eH7 in its sedan version starts at an attractive price of 229,800 yuan, which is approximately 29,367 euros.
As for the convertible model, its price not yet disclosed should slightly exceed this amount.
This new offering from the Hongqi brand, already established in Europe through Norway and the Hongqi eHS9 model, is likely to awaken the interest of European consumers in search of an affordable electric convertible.
