The Geely EX5 Electric SUV Arrives in Europe
An Attractive Price That Increases
The Chinese manufacturer Geely is launching its EX5 electric SUV in Europe, a model known as Galaxy E5 in China, priced at 14,500 euros there. However, once adapted to European standards and subject to customs duties, its price will be about 2.5 times higher. The EX5 positions itself as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y and notably stands out for the battery life.
Features of the Geely EX5
The Geely EX5 measures 4.62 meters in length, 1.90 meters in width, and 1.67 meters in height – dimensions comparable to the Peugeot e-3008. In China, five variants are available, but Europe will focus on the high-end versions. The first two versions feature a 49.52 kWh LFP battery offering a range of 440 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, or about 380 kilometers according to the European WLTP cycle.
Range and Performance
The other three variants are equipped with a 60.22 kWh LFP battery for a range of 530 kilometers CLTC, or about 450 kilometers WLTP. In comparison, the Renault Scénic E-Tech offers 430 kilometers WLTP with a similar battery. The EX5 features the Aegis Short Blade battery, offering an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and an impressive lifespan of one million kilometers, which represents nearly 50 years of driving.
Power and Acceleration
The SUV develops a power of 160 kW (about 217 horsepower) and a torque of 230 Nm, allowing it to reach 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
Prospects in Europe
The entry into the European market will be through Norway, a country where electric vehicles accounted for 96% of sales in August. Commercialization could begin before the end of the year. In terms of price, the EX5 will be much more expensive than in China, probably between 35,000 and 40,000 euros. It will directly compete with the Tesla Model Y Propulsion and the Renault Scénic E-Tech, without benefiting from any ecological bonuses.
