Summary
The bicycle in the Netherlands: a national passion
Cycling statistics for 2023
A recent report from the RAI-Bovag association reveals that in 2023, each Dutch cyclist traveled an average of 1065 km during the year. This represents an impressive total of 19.1 billion kilometers traveled by bicycle by the entire population. Bringing these figures to shorter periods, we get about 88.75 km per month, 22 km per week, and a little over 3 km each day.
A look at the evolution of the practice
Ten years ago, the annual average per person did not reach 1000 km. It was then at 902 km. This increase is largely attributed to the popularization of the electric bike, which makes longer trips accessible.
The key role of electric bikes
In 2022, electric bikes accounted for 56% of bike sales in the Netherlands, or 453,201 units sold out of a total of 804,101. The country is part of a similar trend to that of Germany and Belgium, where electric bikes also dominate the market.
