BYD Shark, the new player in the hybrid pick-up market
The Chinese automobile manufacturer BYD is expanding its range with the introduction of the Shark, a powerful plug-in hybrid pick-up that offers notable electric range and sports a design reminiscent of the famous Ford F-150 Lightning. BYD, known for its expertise in electric vehicles, is now venturing into the plug-in hybrid segment, a strategy that meets the growing demand in specific markets, such as France.
The announcement of the imminent commercialization of the BYD Seal U in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version confirms the brand’s commitment to the electrification of its range. In this same perspective, the Shark brilliantly embodies the potential of hybridization, revealing a deliberately electrified approach.
Innovation and versatility: the promises of the BYD Shark
The BYD Shark offers an enticing combination of performance and versatility, enhanced by advanced DMO Plug-In Hybrid technology. The model is designed to primarily appeal to the American market, where its generous dimensions align with local needs and uses, with a length of 5.46 meters and an impressive wheelbase of 3.26 meters.
Power and range suited to needs
Under the hood, the BYD Shark does not skimp with its 231 hp petrol engine and 204 hp electric engine. The battery, with a capacity of 29.58 kWh, offers an NEDC electric range of 100 km; however, this range could be reduced under the more stringent European WLTP standards. BYD claims a total combined range of 840 km and energy efficiency with a reported consumption of 7.5 l/100 km. While these figures might seem optimistic, they remain an indicator of the vehicle’s energy performance.
Technology and comfort: a state-of-the-art cabin
The pick-up’s interior arrangement reflects BYD’s modernity and technological orientation. On board, there is a rich set of equipment, including an LCD screen for the dashboard, a touch center, and a head-up display HUD, all compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces. The features don’t stop there: 360° panoramic view, under-chassis camera for rough terrains, and an independent suspension system complete the equipment.
The BYD Shark also boasts a towing capacity of 2500 kg, significant payload, and a spacious loading area. While primarily targeting the American market, its arrival in European markets is not improbable for plug-in hybrid pick-up enthusiasts.
