BYD is preparing to enter the electric scooter market
A new challenge for the Chinese manufacturer
BYD, known for its electric vehicles and lithium iron phosphate batteries, is now preparing to produce scooters. Although BYD already supplies batteries to Nexa and manufactures the Scorpio X1 in Singapore, the company now aims to create its own scooter platform.
Revealing patent drawings
According to patent drawings obtained by MotorcycleSports, BYD is planning a scooter in the 250 cc to 350 cc category, with a power of 20 to 35 hp, which could suggest a battery capacity of about 9 to 12 kWh. The front design features a USD fork and two radial brake calipers, while the rear includes a coaxial swingarm connected to the motor.
A well-advanced project
The sketches also show space for a rider and a passenger. This project already seems well advanced, with almost all necessary components ready for approval, except for the mirrors. BYD’s entry into the electric scooter market could therefore be imminent, thus expanding its portfolio in a rapidly growing segment.
