BYD and the Electric Scooter Market
Clarification on BYD’s Involvement in Electric Scooters
Contrary to the information we shared yesterday here, BYD is not actually entering the manufacturing of electric scooters. However, the brand is expected to play a role in this area. Update: The Chinese site IT Home reports that BYD has denied any upcoming commercialization of an electric scooter. The concerned patent was filed by BYD Electronics on behalf of a partner scooter manufacturer. A company executive clearly stated: “BYD is focusing on its core business and has no intention of manufacturing motorcycles.” In other words, BYD will supply batteries and motors to scooter manufacturers.
A Patent Filed by BYD
BYD, the world’s second-largest electric car leader and Tesla’s main competitor, is nonetheless exploring the electric two-wheeler market. A patent was recently filed, revealing interesting details. In addition to its success in electric cars with models like the BYD Seal U, the Chinese company is targeting electric scooters.
The media outlet Auto Home indicated that BYD had filed an electric motorcycle patent with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration. The sketches attached to the patent show a high-performance scooter with a design reminiscent of models like the Yamaha T-Max.
Design and Technical Features
The front fairing of the BYD scooter is aggressive with a large windshield to protect the rider, advanced footpegs, and a wide seat. The Japanese inspiration is evident in the design.
Unlike traditional scooters, the engine of the future BYD model is completely hidden. According to the patent, the engine and battery are located under the rider’s seat. BYD has not yet disclosed the battery specifications or engine power. However, the transmission will be via belt, which is cleaner than the traditional chain. The patent also reveals a front fork with inverted suspension and a twin-cylinder rear shock absorber for better comfort.
Prospects in the European Market
It is not yet known whether this scooter will be available in Europe. However, BYD might leverage its electric car distribution network to introduce its electric two-wheelers as well. While Tesla avoids electric scooters and motorcycles for safety reasons, BYD seems ready to seize this opportunity.
