Summary
BYD extends its horizons with electric scooters
The Chinese leader in electric cars, BYD, is exploring new avenues to capitalize on its battery expertise, illustrated by a new electric scooter powered by its batteries. This advancement does not come from the company itself, but from Tailg, a renowned Asian manufacturer of motorized two-wheelers.
BYD: a key supplier in the battery industry
BYD, although focused on producing electric vehicles, does not intend to venture into scooter manufacturing. Its role lies in supplying batteries and motors to other manufacturers, as is the case with some Tesla models and the Peugeot e-3008. As for scooters, they will be equipped with BYD components but produced by other brands.
A promising start with Tailg and the Fengshen model
The first “BYD two-wheeler” is realized in collaboration with Tailg, unveiling the Fire Eye Mecha 3 “Fengshen” model. Recently announced, this scooter mainly targets young city dwellers and boasts an unprecedented range thanks to the Somersault Cloud Long Range 2.0-Yufeng platform. Offered from 4,599 yuan (about 600 euros), this creation features an attractive look, although it is not linked to BYD’s recent patent.
Partnership and security innovations
BYD and Tailg aim to create batteries with a longevity equivalent to that of vehicles while developing a security system incorporating big data to optimize the user experience. Increased battery security remains a priority of this innovative partnership.
Despite these advances, the arrival of BYD scooters in Europe seems unlikely in the short term, as the local market is already well established and competitive. Chinese brands would struggle to make an impact against an abundant offer of competitive prices and similar performances.
