A New Vision of Urban Mobility by BMW
The horizon of urban mobility is being reinvented by BMW with the prospect of introducing an innovative electric scooter. A patent recently filed suggests the arrival of a foldable scooter at the cutting edge of technology, which could redefine the standards of personal transportation.
BMW seems very active in the electric market at the moment, as evidenced by another patent filed that suggests the arrival of a BMW electric motorcycle.
Innovation and Design
The announcement of an electric scooter by BMW isn’t new, since in 2021, the company had already shared revolutionary concepts. Notably, we remember the Dynamic Cargo, an electric tricycle that led to a fruitful collaboration with Cube.
As for the Clever Commute scooter, it surprised with its atypical aesthetics and unique functionalities.
The Scooter’s Architecture
Comparing the 2024 patent with the initial concept, some elements have remained. The structure is still dominated by a stylized steering column and substantial wheels, whose diameter could reach 12 inches, a notable change, they are no longer solid.
The discreet yet powerful electric motor, with a maximum output of 500 W, is still located at the front, complemented by hydraulic disc brakes.
Double Folding Mechanism
The attention to detail is evident in the optimization of space thanks to the battery’s location. This placement favors a refined double folding system. Beyond the traditional fold, the rear wheel can pivot towards the front, thus significantly reducing the length of the scooter.
When the handlebars are also folded, the scooter reaches an ideal level of compactness for storage in restricted spaces, like a car trunk.
Ease of Transportation and Maneuverability
Mentioned in the patent, a notable advantage is that the rear wheel can continue to roll even in the folded position, greatly facilitating the transport of the scooter in places like public transportation.
The presence of a handle located at the back of the frame is an ergonomic addition for lifting the device once folded.
Commercial Potential
Although no official announcement has been made regarding the commercialization of this electric scooter by BMW, the patent emphasizes a clear orientation towards urban electric mobility.
It remains to be seen whether BMW will pursue this idea independently, or whether it will engage in a new strategic collaboration with partners such as ZEG, Micro Mobility or Angell, as it has previously done for other electric vehicle projects.
