Free training sessions in Southampton with Voi
Free rides and helmets for added safety
To encourage safety on its electric scooters, Voi is offering free rides and a helmet to those who participate in a training session in Southampton later this month. Organized by Pedal Power Training, these free 20-minute sessions will take place on Saturday, May 25th at Guildhall Square between 10 am and 2 pm.
Sessions schedule
Participants will have the opportunity to discover Voi scooters, ask questions, and improve their riding skills. At the end of the session, they will receive a helmet worth £35 and a day pass worth £10, allowing them to ride for free during and after the session.
Current and future regulations for electric scooters in the UK
Currently, electric scooters can only be used on public roads in the UK when rented as part of official trials. Helmets are not mandatory but are recommended. Private scooters are not allowed on public roads at the moment.
In 2022, the government announced the upcoming legalization of electric scooters in a new category of low-speed and zero-emission vehicles, but this legislation has been postponed several times despite calls from various organizations and retailers.
Earlier this year, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety stated that the likelihood of legislating for private scooters with safety-focused regulations by 2024 was nil.
Voi’s safety initiatives
James Bolton, General Manager of Voi in the UK, emphasizes that safety is the company’s priority. “I recommend that everyone who uses or wants to use our scooters participate in our safety events to build their confidence.”
Before starting their first use, all registered users must complete a short safety training in the app. Voi also offers free online training and regularly sends safety tips to its users.
Voi’s electric scooters offer an ecological, economical, and reliable way to travel without congestion or pollution.
Voi’s “Ride Safe” webinars
Voi also organizes monthly online “Ride Safe” webinars until December 12th, these sessions cover scooter handling, traffic rules, road etiquette, and how to park without obstructing pedestrians. By participating in one of these webinars, users get 30 minutes of free riding credits.
